Today we’re making a safe, natural and effective floor cleaner that will put those toxic store-bought cleaners to shame! Put a coat or two of the sealer on and then a couple coats of wax. Health isn’t just about what we put in our bodies, it’s also affected by what we put on our bodies. Or in other words, the cleaners contain significant hazards to health or the environment, and/or companies don’t disclose their full ingredients list, which is a HUGE RED FLAG. Note: Sal Suds does have the natural scent of fir and spruce, so you may find that you don’t even need/want to add essential oils. So this recipe calls for another one of my favorite Dr. Bronner’s products, Sal Suds. It’s made with vinegar and Sals Suds to safely and effectively clean wood floors, as well as tile, vinyl, and laminate. It’s especially important not to use a sopping wet mop with plank floors because excess water can seep between the joints.
And, on days I want to use water and ACV, I add both. One of the key advantages to this product is the ability to install it pretty much anywhere you want. Rather than using artificial colors, preservatives, ammonia and other toxic chemicals, this homemade floor cleaner is made with just 3 ingredients (one of which is water…doesn’t get much safer than that!) and naturally scented with essential oils. Or you can pour all ingredients into a large bucket. Or you can add the solution to a bucket and use a traditional mop the old fashioned way. If you’re not sure why making your own wood floor cleaner is the way to go, this story I wrote for The TODAY Show about why DIY Homemade cleaning products are infinitely better than toxic, expensive store-bought cleaners should do the trick. I love getting these products from Grove Collaborative – it’s a great way to get high-quality (but low-priced) household cleaners delivered on a consistent basis.
“Wood deck surfaces are often harsh and will most certainly strip apart the Swiffer pads.” Instead, Davies says, use a regular mop and Citra Clean Concentrate Cleaner, “as it will be gentle to the wood and won’t leave any marks.” If your deck is a mess and your Swiffer is your cleaning option, check the label to see if it’s formulated for your wood’s finish. Drops of water on the floor act like little magnifying glasses, boiling the surface of the finish and expanding wood fibers. 2. The acetone will eat through the finish of your floor. Your floors, no doubt, will appreciate a bit of attention during this process, too. If you pay attention to the food you eat, then you should also care about the products you use. Please note that I’ve linked to these products purely because I recommend them and they are from companies I trust.
You can use this floor cleaner one of two ways-either add the solution to a spray bottle (I recommend these glass spray bottles, which are the perfect size, pretty to look at and you don’t have to worry about BPA in the plastic) and spray your floor as you go (this is great for spot cleaning) using a microfiber cloth or mop to spread/wipe the cleaner. We have only ever had to replace one plank so far, and it happened the day after we installed the floor. Steam mops have helped to revolutionize household cleaning and have many advantages, some of which aren’t common knowledge. I use a wet Swiffer to clean up spots between steam cleanings. If you are looking for a good mop for cleaning linoleum floors, you will probably be happiest with the Bissell PowerFresh Steam Mop. Nowadays double-glazed windows are considered crucial when it comes to selling a house and this feature will most definitely add value to your property.
